Lure making
1.From woodblock i molded a model of lure.I chose aspen for material, because it is light and easy to be molded, if you can you should use balsa wood, it is the best, for making lures, Rapala also makes most of it´s lures from balsa and many others lure making companies also make lures from balsa wood. There aren´t any lighter or easily molded materials than balsa, but for me aspen was the easiest to get.If your hand is unsteady then you could draw a pattern of your lure on your woodblock.
2.I gave the first touch with coarse sandpaper.Just enough to lure get in the desired shape.
3.With fine sandpaper i gave the last touch. The finer sandpaper you use, the better your end result will be.
4.Next i sawed, with hacksaw from the nose length ways for wire. The second trench i sawed for mount of the tongue.I sawed the lip trench according to how deep i want the lure to go.There is 1 rule, smaller the corner on horizon, the deeper the lure goes. The shape of the lip and the shape of the lure affects how the lure will play.
5.Now i took little drill and drilled a hole for the weight. You should add the weight, because there is a chance lure will fall sideways on water,if you don´t have weight. If you are beginner use weight, later on you can make lures without the weight, if you like.Weight is not necessary, but i would recommend that.
6.For the weight i chose usual fishing weight, they where carefully placed on the bottom of the drilled hole. Not full because you want to leave some room for the wire.
7.For the wire i chose the copper wire(in this case diameter was 1mm(0,03937inches)),what went in one piece inside the lure, making a loop for the hooks.
8.Next i made a lip for the lure. For material i used CD-towers see-through cap.The shape of the lip i cut out with scissors.I smoothed the edges with fine sandpaper. In one end, i melded a trench with hot nail, for the wire.
9.Now i filled the trench with clue. You should use it moderately - just enough, that openings would be nicely filled.
10.When the glue was dry, i used sandpaper to sand down superfluous glue and restored lures previous slim form.
11.Now to the most sophisticated and responsible part - painting. To prevent any paint going on to the lip i used duck tape to cover it up.
12.Before painting i first cover the lure with varnish. It will protect the wood.In terms of security you may add an addition layer of varnish. For varnish i used Boat varnish.
13.Varnish layer half dried, i covered the surface of the lure with white white paint(2-3 layers).Half dry varnish layer because, in that case paint will look more natural and shiny.
14.White paint dried, you can take out colors. For lure painting i use usually aerosols and/or highlighters. You can use other tools - there are no limits, except one, colors should be waterproof. Lure painting is one of the most critical and hardest step.
15.For painting i have developed my own method. First i brush on 2 main layers of paint. On this case it will be, pink under the lure and from above yellow.Using different colors at the same time, colors will "melt together" and the colors will look more streamlined. You should look that you won´t use too much color because color may start flowing and the result will be not so good.
16.Next i have painted back of the lure.Usually i have chosen this from the main tone little more contrast. But there isn´t rule for that.Playing with color combination is one of the many enjoys making the lure..
17.Now to the details. This time i only gave the lure eyes.Beautiful round eyes...You can make round eyes by tipping a nail head into color. You can make the dot with black highlighters. If you like you could paint on the lure some stripes, dots, mickey mouse´s...In this phase i also removed the ducktape from the lure.Painting is done and duck tape isn´t necessary any more.
18.The last phase is to cover the lure with varnish.I used already mentioned boat varnish.Varnish will give the lure beautiful shine. To get stronger protection you can add extra layers. You should also varnish the tongue of the lure.
19. Now add hooks and go fishing.Hopefully the lure will play. This lure did play. When i made my first lures, then some of them went sideways or didn't play at all.If your lure wont play or goes sideways don't worry.....Remove Hooks and ..You have a nice key chain!!!!

Lure Painting (or how to make stripes)
Basically it´s very easy to make stripes, just use a waterproof black marker, that is the simple way.BUT if you want the stripes to look nice you must use aerosol paints and you need a stencil. You can make your very own stencil, just take a piece of paper and scissors and start to cut out the stripes or mickey mouses, depends what kind of lure you are making.
Tips
- Using red hooks will increase your chance getting fish, because fish will more likely eat wounded fish than a healthy one.
- In spring use lure which head is red and body white.
- In summer use lures with more aggressive play.
- I autumn use lures with more lazy play.
- If you are in place where there is lot of weed and you don't have weedless lure, then take the hooks of and cast the lure in to the weed, do it 3-4 times, then put hooks back again and cast near the weed. Pikes like to be in weed at day time, with this tactic they will get more active, and maybe come out of the weed.
- In autumn use darker colors.
- If your lure gets caught in weed then reel the line in real tight and easily knock on your rod 5-8 times, it helps sometimes.

Nothing is more satisfying than making your own lures that you actually fish with and catch fish. Ahhhh the good ol days!
wow how did u do that
Thanks for sharing. I've been wanting to start making some lures and this helps me understand how crankbaits are made. Once again, thanks for sharing!
I started tying flys back in high school. It's a pretty neat feeling to make your own. And it's much easier than what you have done here. I think a person would need even more patience to create these. You almost need to be a craftsman to create these... and you surly must have a lot more patience than to just tie flies. Loved the step by step pictures you posted.
Wow! I'm speechless. This is an awesome Hub. I could totally do this by following these instructions.
Thats great man! Keep it up. If you like fishing check out my hubs as well!
i love the step by step instruction's, i made four of my own for the first time, i didn't know how to fix the weight's until i read your article , thankyou i think it is great ! i am having trouble with the split ring's and hook's . you don't have much room to work with and i have fat stubby finger's.
Lures are great to eat with pasta

i have to make lures for school and i'm really looking forward to it! (not really)
thank hub page you saved me again :)
How did you get the hooks on the wire? I was also wondering if you could melt the weights and put them in as one big weight. I love your paint jobs, and your finishes! You could go in a lure making business!
Great tutorial I was wondering how to get a fish scale look. I too am an avid fly tyer I like to tie feathers and flash on the back hook to give more flash and appeal
nice man i caught three pikes and four bass
the way I paint scales on to my lures is to piant first with darker colors then cover the lure in a mesh cloth that has holes in it like some laundry bags or even the lining of mens swim trunks and I use clothes line clips to pinch cloth tight aroung the lure then respray with a lighter color like gold or yellow. Makes a real nice scale like pattern...think I saw a video on youtube on how to do it
Hi my name is Jerry Rogers and I have woodcarved for several years. I too, have enjoyed making poppers, top water plugs of all sizes and colors. Have you tried neon colors? Needless to say I really enjoyed your site and learned a little different craftsmanship. Thank You for the info, I mean the slide-show. The lures are awesome as well. It must be fun to make your own lures and of course, you can express your own artistic talents. Just so you know...many of the photos did not come up. Might want to check on them.
